La Chimera - TIFF 2023 Review

I went into this screening completely blind in relation to what I was seeing. Alice Rohrwacher's La Chimera follows a British man and an energetic group of grave robbers as they take new leaps towards discovering new tombs and loot them of all the worldly possessions that were left behind.

The film also follows an overarching

theme of death and mourning. Our main man named Arthur (played by Josh O'Connor) is quite literally looking for “the door to the underworld” throughout the film. There was so much more to this film than just a down and out man robbing graves. Shown through Arthur's unwillingness to accept payment for the treasures he helps find and the short scenes involving Arthur’s deceased love, Beiamina, Arthur is very deeply affected by the passing and is having a hard time coping with that throughout the entire film.

Besides the film being written wonderfully.

it was all gorgeously shot. There was something about being taken through an old and unkempt countryside full of shabby homes and windy roads. It was all showcased well, with areas of all types being shown as Arthur takes long, brooding walks at different points. These places shown through the camera are gorgeous with a longing feel. Wide shots show much more than the subject in these scenes.

Alice Rohrwacher really brought us something Special with La Chimera. Something can be taken from every moment of the film. The relationships and the meaning behind actions are a huge example. It is the story being shared that has so much underneath the surface. So much that should be delved into. A honest success on all for levels.
