Wicked Little Letters - TIFF 2023 Review

Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley? I instantly nabbed up that ticket when they went on sale because that sounds like a recipe far success, and I was right. The world premiere of Wicked Little Letters took place during at the Royal Alexandra Theatre at the Toronto Interational Film Festival 2023, The lovely director Thea Sharrock, made an appearance for the premiere, took part in a Q&A after the film and said thanks to those involved with the project. She also gave praise to her two lead actors who were not present due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

I went into this screening absolutely blind. I had not even read the film description when I bought the ticket. Right from the get go, the audience was engaged which made

the whole experience that much more enjoyable. This movie was so entertaining, it kept my attention the entire time. The fact that it was a period piece just added to the satire throughout the film. Everything that

was meant to be comedy worked as well as everything that was meant to be serious and dramatic. The serious and comedic tones for the characters came off really well. I am really impressed with screenwriter Jonny Sweet’s dialogue. Every line flowed so well. Speaking about the script, the pacing was spot on. The audience got information as we needed it and even though the ending was predictable in ways, the characters reactions to it were unexpected and in a way satisfying.

The performances from all of the actors were amazing. Seeing Olivia Colman in something where she was not only a comedy queen, but showed a different side of herself with a completely different energy was nice. I did not know that I needed to see her in a historical comedy until it happened. Jessie Buckley also pulled out all of the stops. Her character was chaotic and energetic. She was definitely the best casting choice that they could have made. Her and Olivia fit their characters and portrayed the rivalry perfectly.

Overall, Wicked Little Letters is a hilariously fun and - in a sense - light film that focused on the absurd and delved into the things that people are sometimes truly thinking in an unexpected way.
